Quantum plots out SMB assault in Australia
Quantum has released hardware it claims will enable resellers and retailers to target markets from SMBs down to advanced home users.
The GoVault Data Protection Solution is a hard disk-based backup device which uses Quantum de-duplication software - the process of removing duplications in data before a backup is made - to speed the process.
"We see this being used as backup in the home through to small or remote offices," country manager, Craig Tamlin, said.
The hardware offers access speeds of 26-34MB per second because it only saves data that has changed since the last backup. Tamlin said Quantum would be lining up low-end tape solutions in its sights.
"Tape in the enterprise isn't going anywhere because it has great performance and the cost per GB is tiny," he said. "But a solution like this could see tape in SMBs start to disappear - maybe within a couple of years."
Besides the de-duplication software, Tamlin said the GoVault differed from simple external hard drives by storing data on cartridges.
"The data is held on a removable, ruggedised hard disk cartridge rather than the hard disk just sitting inside the case," he said. "You can drop this one meter onto the ground and it won't upset the data."
The cartridges come in 40GB, 80GB, 120GB and 160GB capacities and start from A$100 (US$86).
Tamlin said Quantum's distributors in Australia, ACA Pacific, Express Data and Synnex, would begin working with resellers to get the new hardware out to end-users.
"There's a lot of potential here," he said. "We think the resellers and even retailers like Officeworks and Harvey Norman are going to love it."
In other news, Quantum has announced further details of a direct touch team which will source sales leads to pass onto channel partners. Four appointments have been made covering the Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra geographies.
Two former Commander staffers will take up residence in its Melbourne office: Bruce Coulthard as systems engineer; and former technical account manager, Shane Lyell, as Quantum's new enterprise account manager.
In Sydney, former Compaq/HP sales executive, Savvas Xexenis, has taken on an enterprise account manager's role.
The Canberra, Australia, office, meanwhile, has welcomed industry veteran, Steve Mead, as an enterprise account manager. He has worked in the industry for more than 30 years in a variety of positions with EMC, HDS, NetApp, Quantum, Veritas and CA.
