Dell loses bid for 'cloud computing' trademark

Dell cannot register "cloud computing" as a trademark because the term is a generic one describing services offered by many companies, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has said in an initial ruling.

In denying Dell's application, the USPTO included dozens of news stories and other material supporting its contention that cloud computing is a widely-used term of art for the technology industry.

Linux patent pool to push for 'defensive publication'

A tech vendor-backed company that buys up patents in an effort to protect the Linux community from intellectual property litigation will soon launch a Web site to help inventors file defensive publications -- documents that make details of an invention public, preventing others from later making patent claims on it.

Nokia, Qualcomm shelve litigation, reach licensing agreement

Nokia and Qualcomm have agreed to shelve all litigation between themselves, including a complaint by Nokia to the European Commission, after reaching a new licensing agreement that covers a number of major wireless technologies.

Nokia claims victory over Qualcomm in ongoing patent battle

The German Federal Patent Court ruled Wednesday that a Qualcomm GSM patent claim against Nokia is invalid, said the Finnish phone giant.
